There is no doubt that cultural shows are to bring back the bygone eras. And from that we gain an artistic yet insightful look into the culture of one country. In this post, we would love to recommend the list of our 6 favorite cultural shows in Vietnam. They range from the traditional performances in the backdrop of communal house’s yard to the modern theatrical shows that are delicately choreographed. Well, there’s no mystery as they all are top-rated on TripAdvisor, we just like to add some of our personal thoughts.
1. My village – The poetry of ancient Vietnamese village life
“My village” is an exquisite merger of custom and novelty, where the beauty of Northern Vietnamese village’s life is poetically presented under new circle approach. This show had a very successful time of taking a world tour from 2009 to 2012, in Asia, Europe, America and Australia.The latest abroad show was at the Sydney Opera House in last June. However everyone would probably agree that there is no better place to see a traditional show than its home country, right? The music plays an important role in recreating the ancient atmosphere of Northern Vietnam’s rural life. 20 different kinds of folk instruments are being used to excellently intermingle with juggling, acrobatics and bamboo cirque. The moves of performers are aesthetic and at the same time carry a lot of emotions, from amusement to tension. From all of these, daily lifestyle of indigenous villagers are recreated vividly on the stage, from fishing, farming to gathering. At the end, the most popular feeling of the audience is that we all wish it would last like 6 hours rather than 60 minutes.

- Ionah Show – The Cirque du Soleil of Vietnam
This show is surely the most suitable one for your kids due to its advanced stage effects and colorful costumes. The name of the show- Ionah which means “Hanoi” spelled backwards. And just like its name suggests, the show is where the old fairy tales are restaged by modern theater arts to create a pure yet passionate Hanoi. Regarded as the Cirque du Soleil of Vietnam, this 90-minute performance is filled with various types of art which splendidly blended together and presented on stage. It’s not an overstatement to say that Ionah has everything that a show needs and even beyond, from belly dance to hip hop, from the iconic images of Hanoi like Long Bien bridge, 36 old streets to the dreamy ones only visible in the wonder land of Ionah. Other elements are exclusive costumes for each character, 3D background, lights, the arts of circus and gymnastic. In short, everything. This is truly a journey of emotions which will take you from excitement, fright to deeply moved, and joy at the end. Watch the show and you can literally see how much the creators love Hanoi. The dynamic connection between performers and audience throughout the show definitely wins an extra point in the traveler’s hearts.

- The Quintessence of Tonkin – Where farmers become artists
Be inspired from the farming culture and village life of the Tonkin- the agricultural region around Red River Delta, North Vietnam, the show aims to celebrate the heritage of Tonkin. An hour ride away from busy old quarter of Ha Noi, you’ll reach the location. The unique stage is set on water and leans on the Thay mountain which adds an extra sense of countryside. Complemented by stunning 3D visual effects, authentic costumes, live music, choreography, the audience will be taken from folklore, music, poetry to water puppetry and Buddhism. In short, this show is able to recapture the key elements of Vietnamese village life. Regarding to the cast, there’re over 200 performers. In which half of them are the professional artists, the other half are the farmers of Sai Son commune. In day time, they work in the field, at night time, they become artists on the stage. After all, who can deliver the story of Tonkin better than the villagers themselves? When it comes to a show like this, language is no longer a barrier. The only downside is the 60-minute show is too short for what it brings.

4. A O Show – Paradoxes in harmony of Vietnamese life

Bamboo is an essential feature of Vietnamese rural life and in this show, it plays the part of a storyteller. Other than bamboo presence, A O is a journey of joy with acrobatics, dance, theatre and music based around Vietnam’s transition from rural to urban life. It not only depicts the daily activities but also interprets the dreams of Vietnamese people which are fanciful yet ordinary. It’s easy to feel the enthusiasm and energy being transcended from the dynamic and talented cast. From the amusing body languages to comical half-village, half-city situations were excellently performed. The Vietnamese life is characterized meticulously from the peaceful country life to the vibrancy of urbanization. It was powerful, funny and really kept everyone’s attention from start to finish. You’ll be amazed of how contrasting things can be lovely in harmony.

- Teh Dar show – The haunting anthem of Vietnamese tribe life
Someone might refer Teh Dar as another version of A O Show which illustrates the lifestyle and culture of South West Vietnamese tribe life. But it’s much more than that. The name Teh Dar means “going in circle” represented the South West Vietnamese’s belief in the reincarnation and how the cycle of birth, suffering, death and rebirth effect in each member of the society. Of all 3 shows from Lune Production, Teh Dar exudes the most mystical ambience from the very beginning. The masks were being wore by the artists in the back of their heads, plus the sounds of enchanting music from tribal instruments like buffalo horn are quite haunting. All of these establish the sense of the mountains and jungles. Every minute of it will keep you wowed. During the performance, the audience will be taking from one surprise to many others. The 60 minutes of excitement and artistry is filled with stunning yet daring acrobatics, and hypnotizing melody from exotic tribal instruments. Be prepared for the whispers of “Wow”, “Amazing” and “Fantastic” were heard so frequently during the show. And just like the tribal people’s belief, as the artists keep inspiring, the circle of tribal life keeps going, the cultures shall remain.

- Hoi An Memories Show – The nostalgic chorus of Faifo
Regarding to the cast, Hoi An Memories Show features the biggest cast out of these 6 ones with 500 artists and they will be performing a magnificent show in a 3000-seat arena. The show offers a picture of Vietnamese culture via a historical lens. Hoi An used to be the multi-national trading port in Southeast Asia in the 1500s, known under the name of Faifo. This era immensely marked a crucial trace and mostly created the unique charm of Hoi An as it has always been for ages. During the show, you can feel the authentic atmosphere of a vibrant ancient port. The stage is glorious. Dining and Apsara dance at Crystal Angkor Restaurant – Siem Reap

Following the Apsara dance in Khmer culture, we would like to share with you our own experience of dinner and Apsara dance at Crystal Angkor Restaurant. Even though we are not often used to the combination of dinner of cultural dance, we have to admit that we totally loved it. After all, what could possibly top a night of nicely presented Khmer cuisine alongside with graceful royal dance?

In this post, we’d like to focus on the show instead of the food. Why? Because the food speaks itself. Just kidding, the reason is that Apsara dance requires some firsthand knowledge for travelers to not miss out the best parts and better appreciate this precious art form.

The show starts at 7.30 pm and ends around 8.30pm. At Crystal Angkor Restaurant, a typical performance contains 5 parts of Apsara dance with different symbolic meanings every night. Before the show begins, a leaflet will be handed out to you. In this, you can find all the information of the entire performance with the meanings behind. Spending some minutes to check this out is a very good warm up before the show.

And here comes the show.

1. The Blessing Dance

Featuring graceful movements, this dance is just a perfect opening performance for the full show. In Angkorian civilization, this dance was believed to give blessing to the King, or the Royal Kingdom in general. The female dancers usually go in a group of odd numbers (3,5 or 7) and wear Khmer costumes to represent the Devata (angel). They carry the golden goblets full of blossoms and gently toss them towards the guests as an act of giving blessings. This part did a wonderful job in infusing the royal and sacred atmosphere into the audience.

2. Coconut Shells Dance

The coconut dance is the one with the biggest number of artists, both female and male. This dance is normally performed during the Cambodian wedding ceremony and other festivals for cheering the atmosphere. All dancers will hold a pair of polished coconut shells. The way they rhythmically communicate with each other by coconut bowls, the smiles, shouts and movements are very gentle yet passionate. It supposedly symbolizes the delight and the harmony in Cambodian life.

3. Mekhala Dance

According to our Cambodian friend, this dance is the metaphor for the defeat of good over evil in general. There are two characters illustrating the victory of beneficial rains over the dry and stormy season. Armed with a crystal ball casting rays of lightning, the goddess of waters- Moni Mekhala triumphs over the demon- Ream Eysaur whose axe creates thunder. The female dancer is also the vedette of the night. She is always at the center of every part, however her pose and facial expressions here are our favorite of the night.

4. Pailin Peacock Dance

This performance is a legacy of ethnic groups from Pailin- a province at the west of Cambodia. This is probably the liveliest performance of all night. The costumes represent the vibrant colors of peacock’s wings and the movements implies a courting scene between a peacock and a peahen. The dance is believed to bring joy and prosperity to villagers, or to the nation in general. Hence it is often performed during New Year or rituals such as praying for rain during time of dryness.

5. Apsara Dance

Save the best for the last, here comes Apsara dance. Khmer people believed that Apsara is the goddess of dance and this dance is sometimes referred as “the heavenly dance”. At the most thriving stage of Angkorian era, the dance was performed at offering ceremonies and palace celebrations. In case you get too caught up in other details such as the costumes, the storylines and symbols in the 4 previous parts, here’s the chance to take a closer look at their classical hand movements. You’ll be amazed by the various forms of their hand gestures from the stem, the bud, the leaf to the flower in bloom… “Elegance” would be the best word to describe this dance. This is the best wrap up that anyone can ask for a wonderful night.

Apsara dance in Khmer culture
When it comes to Cambodia, Angkor Wat is undoubtedly No. 1 on the must-see list. What’s about the second one on the list? In our opinion, Apsara dance should be the next one you see after Angkor Wat. Because it is the most profound and aesthetic art form in Cambodian culture and also recognized by UNESCO as an intangible heritage.

The amazing journey of this art form overcoming the Khmer Rouge regime is unbelievable. During that infamous period of Cambodian history, all art forms and cultural traditions were supposed to be destroyed for the “purification” of the nation. Miraculously, the art survived after the collapse of the regime and continued to thrive until today.

What does Apsara means

In Khmer belief, Apsara is the goddess of love and dance. You’ll see this image very often being carved on the walls of Khmer constructions such as Angkor Wat. During the Angkorian era, Apsara dance used to be performed at palace for special royal events. Evidence of this elegant art form can be easily found in the walls of ancient temples across this country.

The outfit

The outfit, which is comprised of elegant silk clothing, stunning jeweled headdresses and precious necklaces, earrings, bracelets and anklets. The glorious look of the traditional costumes immensely sparks the royal ambience and the sacred atmosphere.

The movements

The gesture, the curve of the arm and the dancer’s body recreate the epic stories carved on the ancient temples’ walls. The main traits of the dance are the hand gestures, and more than 1,500 exist. Each movement of the fingers has its own distinct meaning, from worshiping the spirits of nature by depicting a flower in bloom to referencing one of the hundreds of Buddhist and Hindu legends. The hand movements is the most noticeable but their facial expressions are very attractive as well. Without a single word, the stories are being told through those fantastic movements and they come directly to the audience’s hearts.

The stories

Some people might call Apsara the Cambodia Ballet but it’s more than just a dance, it carries the history, culture and wishes of a nation. Through dance, Cambodian want to transfer their wishes to Gods. That could be the hope for a peaceful and prosperity life. Apsara is also a history book recording both the tragic and joyful pages of Cambodia. Apart from that, Apsara also carries the daily story of four life stages: of birth, disease, old age, death which all human beings have to go through in Eastern belief. In other words, this dance represent the spirit of Cambodian people passing down from generations to generations.

The dancers

Apsara dancers start their trainings at the early age, around 8-9 years old. Due to the difficulty and precision of each gesture, the bone has to be as flexible as possible. Their fingers can fold easily to near their wrists. If you have time, get to know the stories of the dancers. You might learn one or two things about this interesting art form.

The killing field- A dark page in Cambodian history
The Khmer Rouge under their evil leader Pol Pot set foot in Phnom Penh on April 17^th 1975 and soon took control of the country. The day quickly became the darkest day of Cambodian history till now. It marked a murderous regime that lasted for 4 years.

Their ill ideology aims to establish a classless communist state based on an agricultural economy. In the other words, the external world must be wiped out. The capitalism, the Western aids, the foreign languages, the education and health care are all erased in the blink of an eye.

Under the Khmer Rouge, there were 2 options. Option 1: you obeyed and lived. Option 2: you defied and ended up at one of the many prisons around the country; and ultimately, silenced permanently. Normal life was not an option.

Approximately 1.7 million Cambodians were believed to dead during that horrible crisis for many reasons such as starvation, diseases, malnutrition or publicly executed as the nation’s enemies.

Tuol Sleng (S21) Genocide Museum and Choeung Ek genocidal center are two of those former prisons in Phnom Penh. For those travelers who look for a further understanding of the Khmer Rouge’s barbaric dictatorship and the genocide in general, these are the must dos. However, we suggest you not to do both in the same day as it might be too much to take.

It’s obviously not a gentle topic to talk about, let alone to visit and recreate all the scenes in your head. But for us, we’d rather face the ugly truth than avoid it. And maybe it’s a way for victims to be heard and remembered as well.

In this post, we’ll take you on a tour to Choeung Ek genocidal center or the killing field. Located about 15 km from the center of Phnom Penh, the field witnessed the murder of 17,000 men, women, children and infants who had been tortured at Tuol Sleng were transported to be executed. There are 2 options available. You can either hire a guide or get a headset and a tape. We chose the second one as perhaps the silence is necessary in these places. All you can hear is bird song and see chickens wandering through the orchards. Travelers will be provided with a headset to quietly hear the story which sometimes featured the chilling account of a guard, an executioner or a survivor. You’ll see people walking around, drowning in their own thoughts. “It’s not an easy place to visit.” That’s the very first sentence for introduction. We chose the English one and the narrator did an excellent job in telling a horrible story in an emotional way. Through those words, everything around us became different, extremely harsh but real.

Mass graves lied thousands of people who were massacred. How they were killed will be specific in the audio and nothing is ever enough to prepare anyone of us for this. Fragments of human bone and clothes lay half-buried in the land vividly reminded us of the horrors once existed here.

The killing tree was probably the most horrendous part. It’s where children and women- the vulnerable ones get killed first in the most inhumane way. A lot of wristbands were left by the visitors as a way to commemorate the colorful lives that have been taken away forever.

Some parts of the tours can be warned for someone who can’t take the sorrow at its deepest level. Your choice, you can push to continue hearing or to skip. But it doesn’t change the fact that terrible things happened. Some memorable parts can be named as the music of revolution from the speakers to hide the screams from prisoners who have been executing at the same time, a beautiful piece of music to response to the cruel crime…

When it comes to the genocide and holocaust, “Schindler’s list” or “The pianist” are two great movies to educate us on that. However, nothing does this experience justice, as it is raw and genuinely disturbing. To take the site for what it is, we young generations should come there. Don’t feel guilty for taking photos since the purpose of the site is to experience the horror and understand what went on here and spread the words hoping it never happens again.
The Memorial Stupa stands in the middle of the field as a beacon to all the lives that lost decades ago. It houses more than 8000 skulls arranged by sex and age. The cracked skulls, broken bones and various killing tools are just too heartbreaking.

Other than that, there is a museum with further information on the Khmer Rouge and the criminal trials, some of which are still ongoing today; and a video room to show a short movie about that period.

The park itself is surrounded by soaring mountains which are up to 1,554 meters high. Statistically, there are over 550 plant species, and 300 species of wildlife live in the forest. Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
A visit to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum or S21 for short, is a deeply traumatic experience. Like the killing field, there are also 2 options available. We chose the same thing as we preferred immersing ourselves in a narrative.

If killing field is the place for executing prisoners, S-21 is the place for legalizing their deaths. First they forced the prisoners admit the delusional crimes which they never committed. And then made them point their fingers at their friends, families, relatives… After the gruesome process ended, most were then sent to Choeung Ek for mass executions. About 20,000 inmates were believed to have entered this living hell.

S21 Museum used to be an ordinary high school in downtown Phnom Penh. From the appearance, it still looks just like any other school with 5 buildings face a grass courtyard and green lawns. And it would still be until today if the Khmer Rouge didn’t appear and scattered the worst nightmare in human history. Classrooms were turned to torture and interrogation cells with metal bed frames. On the wall are the horrifying photographs of bodies chained to bed frames with wet blood underneath. Today we still can see the sheets with dried blood stains. It’s raw and horrifying as you can vividly recreate what’ve been done here. We have to admit that it does take some courage to step inside. Some will even make you feel sick to your stomach.
The Khmer Rouge kept personal records of each prisoner and these are on show in details. A photographic archive was carefully created and now presented in one building which is also the most haunting part of all. The purpose of it was to prove to the Khmer Rouge leaders that their orders had been obeyed. Each of the portraits tells a horror story of shock, resignation, confusion, defiance. Each room focuses on each period from the very beginning to the final days of the regime. Slowly we made our way through rooms as hundreds of innocent Cambodian faces passed by.
There are two prisoners who survived Tuol Sleng through their skills and their stories were unraveled in the audio tape. From time to time, they can be found in the courtyard and open to talk to us as well.

The museum now serves as memorial to the monstrous crimes of the Khmer Rouge. It stands there to remind us all of that darkest page of human history. At the end of the day, there must be a lot of people with the same thought: “it could have been a movie scene.” But it wasn’t.

Vietnam boasts a prosperous tradition in textiles, especially when it comes to hand-woven ones among the distinctive minority groups. Those artworks convey personal and spiritual identity such as marital status, social status, tribal history, accomplishments and personality. Even though textile weaving strictly follows conventional practices, there is plenty of rooms for individuality and differentiation.

Despite of Vietnamese reputation for modesty regarding to feminine traits, ethnic women shine in their unique beauty. Don’t be surprised for that. They may not know the first thing about fashion in term of modern concepts, but they found their way. Unlike the way Western girls express their gender awareness, it’s totally different. Part of the reasons why people dress up is to attract the opposite gender. And the ethnic minority is no exception. If we wear a ring to claim our marital status, the ethnic minority use their fashion. It could be some accessories in the hemp of a skirt or the number of buttons in the shirt coming in odd or even number, respectively for single or married girls.

The event where the world get to see all of this is the ethnic markets. To call it a fashion show is an understatement because it’s way more than models and clothes. The people here truly live that.

Those special symbolic patterns reflect the nature at its prime such as birds, tiger eyes, horse, trees and the rice terraces… The women use their rich imagination combine with diligence perseverance in every stitch to make a complete costume.

The ethnic minorities believe that the head is where the soul and the spirit of a humanbeing are being kept. At first, the headgears were to fully protect the heads, and gradually the women put in those their characteristics and their creativity.
